Day 8, januari 15, Scenic Cruising Chilean Fjords

It was a very restless night for me. The ship was rolling quite a bit, despite the sea being relatively calm. During the day, it doesn't bother me much, but I do prefer it when my bed stays still.

After showering, we headed to breakfast in the Lido Market and then spent some time relaxing in The Crow's Nest. We planned to attend Dr. Neil Gilbert's lecture on life and work in Antarctica at 11 o'clock, anticipating that it would be crowded since he was very good earlier in the week.

At 10 o'clock, Jim McParland returned with a talk about fjords. We went there mainly to secure a spot for 11 o'clock, but his presentation was better than the previous one, perhaps because it was something new then, so it was enjoyable. However, after sitting there for 2 hours, Jan was ready for a walk and a change of posture. Neil Gilbert's lecture was once again fascinating, and he mentioned that he had lived and worked continuously in Antarctica for 2.5 years.

So, we went outside for a stroll along the deck to admire the fjord, which unfortunately was quite cloudy. Afterward, we returned to the cabin for a bit.

As we arrive there, the captain announces that today we'll be sailing through the fjords and tonight we'll be back at sea, so we can expect some "motion of the ocean" like last night. The forecast for tomorrow predicts fewer clouds, occasional showers, and slightly cooler weather, around 5 degrees Celsius with a wind force of 4. It's almost similar to today, just a bit colder and hopefully with some sunshine. Today's temperature was expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius.

We read for a while; I finish my book, and then we head to Deck 9, to the Dive In, for a delicious hamburger lunch. We'll surely come back here again. We get to see the fjord up close, but it's cloudy, and there's occasional light rain.

Here's where you pick up your hamburger when your pager goes off

After spending some time in the cabin, we head back to the Dive In, as it's cocktail hour and I had promised myself Bohemian cocktail . In the shop, I buy a lightweight jacket with "Cruise South America" embroidered on the sleeve. The ship is rocking more and more, especially noticeable in the pool where the water is affected. It's like a turbulent wave pool; you could almost surf in it. Water splashes over the high edge, wetting the floor, and the crew is mopping vigorously. It's quite a scene.

Unfortunately, the Bohemian cocktail is not as successful as last time. I think they forgot the elderflower, which provides a fresh, sweet-sour accent. Without it, the balance is off, and the bitterness dominates.

We take a stroll past the Ocean Bar, where the Ocean Band is playing, and they are frankly not very good. Their Spanish accent is quite evident in English songs, and the singer has a few mishaps, both with his voice and the equipment. Ouch😖!  The singer from the Rolling Stone Band is there too, and he can't help but chuckle.
We have an early dinner at the Lido Market because the first show at the Billboard on Board starts at 7:30 PM. Meagan and Gabe are excellent as always, and this time, we also have a waitress named Som who puts on a great performance herself. She seems to be enjoying herself immensely.

In the first show, we managed to snag two seats on the side, and during the first break, which was an hour long this time, there was a music quiz hosted by Angela, who had a very strong Spanish accent. Her favorite expression seemed to be "we'll see wat happens," and she must have said it about 700 times. The idea was to write down the artist and title based on a short intro of 15 songs. It was just a way to pass the time, as there were no prizes or anything like that. You did it for yourself or with your group. I scored 12 out of 30 points. There were quite a few "oh yeah" moments where you wouldn't have thought of it right away.
We're now comfortably settled on the couch, and we plan to stay here for the rest of the evening. This show is packed, unlike the third one, which starts at half past ten. Everyone is definitely going to bed early tonight, including us when it's over.
